The Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club was founded in 1910 by a group of miners who sought to have their own social club in the Wonthaggi township and
not wishing to travel the considerable thirsty journey of several kilometers to the Dalyston Hotel. The Club was designed from the blue prints of the
Workmen’s Clubs in Great Britain. Two old shops were transported by bullock team from Outtrim, a distance of over twenty kilometers across hilly
country to form the basis of the club building. A liquor license was granted in Jan 1911. At this stage the membership fee was 10/- ($1.00) per year.
The Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club is located at:

In 1922 the club was burnt to the ground and the
following year a brick building was erected on the
same site at a cost of 6,000 pounds ($12,000).
Over the years the club prospered, until in 1938
disaster struck once more and the building was
again damaged by fire.
The premises were again rebuilt and served the
members well until extensive renovations were
carried out in 1985, 1995 and 1999. In 1993
the club was granted a Gaming License, and
membership accelerated rapidly, prompting the
$1 million refurbishment in 1995. A $2.5 million
extension & renovation was soon needed and
with the purchase of more land, this renovation
was completed in September 1999. Further
enhancing the club and offering members the
latest & best facilities in the area.
